The Black Education Research Center (BERC) at Teachers College, Columbia University, conducts and analyzes research focused on improving the educational experiences and outcomes of students of African descent in the U.S. and throughout the world.

MISSION

Our mission is to generate new knowledge at the intersections of Black studies, culture, politics, and education to improve the quality of Black educational opportunities and outcomes in the U.S. and throughout the world.

VALUES

We value research and scholarship grounded in Black, African-centered, and indigenous knowledge and ways of knowing; education research, policy, and practice communities will be better equipped to tackle the complex challenges associated with race and social inequality in America’s schools.

VISION

We advance an emancipatory vision of education grounded in our values and based on the following tenets: (1) education is a civil and human right, (2) education is a social, cultural, and political process, (3) education is a calling and valued profession, (4) education is a collective responsibility, and (5) education is the practice of freedom.

METHODS

We use critical and culturally sensitive approaches to examine educational inequality, opportunity, and the policies and practices intended to address educational systems that sadly, despite generations of research, advocacy, and activism, remain separate and unequal.

IMPACT

We strive to serve as a useful resource for university-based researchers, PK-12 and higher education practitioners, policymakers, and research and policy analysts interested in learning more about Black education, the problem of racial inequality in schools and society, and what can be done to ensure every learner can realize their full human potential.

THE SCALE FRAMEWORK FOR LEARNING AND LIBERATION

“Research is formalized curiosity. It is a poking and prodding with a purpose. It is a seeking that he who wishes may know the cosmic secrets of the world and they that dwell therein.”
